At-Home Flu Shots

41Fz4nv8GGLFlu season is here, so there is no better time to ensure that everyone in your family has a strong immune system. While I have my personal opinion on the flu shot itself, I am going to throw that aside for this post and share 6 at-home “flu shots” that will boost your immune system naturally.

These six shots are made up of real food ingredients that boost your body’s immune system to naturally ward off colds and flus. Some of the below are made with a juicer (I own this one) although if you want to boost your immune system and do not have a juicer or do not wish to invest in one, you can increase the amount of the particular food you consume in your diet.

IMG_55421) “Apple Cider Slammer”
Apple cider vinegar is just that, a type of vinegar made from apple cider. This ‘Slammer’ contains beta-carotene, which according to the Mayo Clinic possesses antioxidant properties that counteract the damage done by free radicals and in return helps boost your immune system [source]. Find organic, raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar for maximum health benefits.
Shot Recipe: Shoot back a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with a two tablespoons of filtered water. Can’t stomach it? I personally suggest mixing a tablespoon with a tall 8oz glass of cold water to dilute it. I also add a touch of raw honey to sweeten it. This source suggests drinking this apple cider daily.

IMG_55492) “Green Machine”
Green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, and parsley provide a significant amount of nutrients including but not limited to, magnesium, folate, and vitamin B6. These crucial nutrients play an important role in optimal immune health [source].
Shot Recipe: Toss together a selection of leafy greens in your juicer and enjoy. If you can’t swallow the taste of only vegetables in your juice, throw an apple through the juicer for some natural sweetness.

3) “Cod Liver Kiss”
IMG_5543Fermented Cod Liver Oil is a raw, traditionally fermented food. It contains more Vitamin A per unit weight than any other common food and is a great source of the ever important Omega-3 Fatty Acids. This powerhouse real food helps regulate and improve overall function of your immune system [source]. Read more about Fermented Cod Liver Oil here and here.
Shot Recipe: Fermented Cod Liver Oil comes in two forms. You can source it in its liquid form and take it daily as a shot, or you can choose to purchase it in capsule form. I buy these capsules from a trusted company. Check out the recommended dosage here.

IMG_55454) “Blueberry Blast”
Blueberries are very high in antioxidants compared to other fruits and vegetables and contain powerful phytochemicals which give the fruit their deep blue color. A recent study done by the University of Oregon shared that the pterostilbene found in blueberries, when combined with vitamin D, could boost the body’s ability to fend off illness [source].
Shot Recipe: Juice a handful of blueberries and enjoy this sweet and sour drink. You can also simply increase your intake of blueberries if you do not own a juicer or wish to juice them.

IMG_55465) “Carrot Kicker”
Carrots are an great source of beta carotene. One of beta carotene’s main roles is to support the body’s mucus membrane, which lines the respiratory and intestinal tracts. A strong lining makes it more difficult for bacteria to enter the bloodstream and cause you trouble [source].
Shot Recipe: Juice a handful of carrots and enjoy. Don’t have a juicer? Do your best to incorporate carrots into the upcoming weeks menus!

6) “Lemon & Ginger Drop”
IMG_5548Lemon and Ginger are a powerhouse duo. This couple not only supports a strong immune system by the lemon’s Vitamin C content, but together they help fight off an oncoming illness. Lemon juice’s anti-inflammatory qualities soothe sore throats and irritated membranes while the ginger helps cleanse your system [source].
Shot Recipe: Add a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice to 3 tablespoons of water. Grate or juice a pinch of ginger and enjoy. Instead of taking this as a shooter you can also enjoy a glass of homemade lemonade and simply add ginger.

*Dosage: I personally take Cod Liver Oil daily, and rotate between these other “flu-shots” throughout the week.  As the shots are made up of real food and I do not have any allergies or food aversions, I take them freely!
**Please remember that these are just some ways to boost your immune system naturally and are not recommended as the only way to stay healthy this winter season.
***These “flu-shots” are a fun play on words. While the sources will give you more information on each “shot” and how they help your immune system, they are not a natural version of the influenza vaccine and do not contain the influenza virus. About Kristen

  1. Kristen I love this! It’s brilliant! Can’t wait to try some of these and share them with my readers.

    • Thanks Faith!! It is a fun play on words for sure :)

      • Is this a daily dose or weekly?

        • Hi Laney,
I personally take Cod Liver Oil daily, and rotate between these other “flu-shots” throughout the week. As the shots are made up of real food, I take them freely.

        • I would think that these are daily doses of each, that you can spread out through the day.
Weekly doses might be enough to give a mild boost to your diet if you do not eat these types of foods regularly.
Like the saying of “an apple a day”, could equal the shot of Apple Cider Vinegar.
This could be a good way to get needed nutrients into the youngsters, with a smaller/shorter duration of tasting.

  2. This is awesome! I need to get me some shot glasses now. I wonder if I could get my kids to take these. :)

  3. Seriously awesome idea! Thanks for sharing!

  4. I do a daily smoothie of spinach, carrot, apple, juice/pulp of an orange, banana, almond milk, and egg white powder or protein powder.I will also sometimes throw I some berberries

  5. What a GREAT idea! I’m sharing this with all of my friends and on my Facebook page… While I’m not a fan of the vaccine, these are some flu “shots” that I can definitely stand behind.

  6. I love this! I’m all for promoting health to ward off illness rather than pumping our bodies full of “who knows what” flu shots. Love your pictures too :-)

  7. What cool ideas? Thanks for doing this. Where did you buy the shot glass set?

  8. Christina Ventura-DiPersia

Not a fan of how you call these at-home “flu shots”. While there may be anecdotal evidence that some of these ‘shots’ do boost your immune system, calling them ‘flu shots’ is really misleading and a bit irresponsible, in my honest opinion as a public health practitioner, to be advocating to your readers.

    • Christina,
Thanks for sharing your opinion on the post. With my views on the influenza vaccine aside, I strongly believe that the best way for people to stay healthy is through eating a diet full of real foods. The play on words in the post is meant to be just that- a play on words. I do not suggest that this is a replacement for the influenza vaccine if someone so chooses to take that path and receive it. I appreciate your feedback and have added a extra “disclaimer” to ensure that people know that these “flu-shots” are not a natural version of the influenza vaccine and do not contain the influenza virus (incase there was any confusion by readers).
      In good health,

      • Kristen, I think you did an awesome job writing this out. personally I agree with you and, the only reason that Christina , left that comment is because she is in the medical field. I do not take any deadly pharmaceutical medicine and I have not been sick in 12 years. They cannot patent the all natural and make money off it and that is why they push all this crap that will kill you. My mom gets the flu shot, every year and she gets sick no matter what. The one year she missed it she did not get sick one time. In my personal opinion they can shove deadly pharmaceutical where the sun don’t shine. ALL NATURAL IS THE ONLY WAY TO FLY!!!!!!!!!!!! Hugs to you and God bless. <3

        • Anecdotical evidence means nothing. Of course you can still get sick, even if you get the flu shot. genius. They aren’t a magic pill. They only protect against certain strands. They are made in advance according to what strands they think will be infecting people this year. If a new strand arises, you will still get sick because they shot did not include that one. That would require you to know what you are talking about though. People a hundred years ago would kill for the medicine we have now and you think its a big conspiracy. Why don’t you ask people from 1000 years ago how “all natural” went for them. Look up their life expectancy.

          • I do not think they would kill to have the garbage they have for you to put in your body now a days. Eating right taking care of yourself and knowing how to use herbs is the only way to fly. ED you are sadly mistaken, I will not call you a genius. Simply because you agree with pharmaceutical end of things. I am a perfect example of good health and what herbs and eating right do for you, I NEVER GET SICK! God bless

          • I don’t know exactly what to believe. Neither me, nor my kids have ever had a flu shot and we have never had the flu. They both have perfect attendance in school, 15 and 13 years old, respectively..and we eat pizza and burgers and whatever we want. So, I am drawn on it …maybe we are blessed , lucky or genetics but I will not fix what isn’t broken.

      • I think those with a sense of humor knew where you were going with the play on words.

      • I understood completely what you were saying here Kristen (dah) and I agree fully…we have been juicing for many, many years..have never gotten the flu shoot and never intend on doing so! We make a V8 juice every morning with carrots tomatoes and celery…(home grown) sometimes lemon and apples, sometimes pineapple, sometimes grapefruit…Mixing it up about every other day…Thanks for posting :)

    • I love that you said this. Great! Full of vitamins! Full of things we should be getting from our diet anyway! NOT going to prevent somebody from contracting the VIRUS that causes the flu. It is deadly to some people. If you get it, and pass it on to someone’s infant, and they die? This is really misleading.

    • Well, Doctors and Pharmacists are misleading and irresponsible when it comes to actual flu shots. Did you ever have a doctor give you the vaccine insert to read before the shot. They push the flu shot on pregnant women even as the insert says “Category C vaccine, has not been tested for safety or efficacy in pregnant women, may cause fetal damage and reproduction issues.”

    • It is clearly written that “…they are not a natural version of the influenza vaccine…” Anybody with the tiniest but of common sense would realize this.

      • Jessica, you would think so. Although based on the number of messages I received I thought it wouldn’t hurt (and would be somewhat comical) to add this note in for those who might be confused :)

  9. I work for a health care provider and will not take the flu vaccine because I get sick every time. I have argued with nurses that say you cannot get the flu from the vaccine. Funny that the people at work recieved them and was sick for a week. I agree that we could get all the vitamins and health benefits from what goes in our bodies in the form of food.

    • Thank God for people like you, God bless

    • I agree, Melissa. Everyone at my work got the flu shot and everyone was sick (some even developed bronchitis). I also got sick, because I caught it from them, but my illness was short-lived as I am a very natural person, taking supplements daily such as echinacea and vitamin c among others and eat whole healthy organic foods ( I did not get the shot). My co-workers had to go to the doctor to get antibiotics, I did not. My illness went away on its own. This was the first time in about 5 years I have gotten sick, and the last time was also because everyone came to work sick.

  10. I have a hard time believing that someone would be confused as to what’s in these “flu shots”. Some people…lol! Just wanted to say it looks like a cute and fun way to get an extra immune boost this fall!

  11. My wife use to insist that my boys and I drink a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water and honey. She explained how good the ACV was for our digestive tract and the honey was, well, the only pure food we would eat. The boys and I decided we couldn’t stomach sipping these toddies so we skipped a step. We started doing ACV shots {{YIKES}}. That only lasted a short while though..lol.

    Thanks for the great article.

  12. Thanks for posting these ideas and recipies!! I also love the teas as well, with 7 kids and this time of the season natural ways really help!! There is tea in the evening and a round if shots in the morning!!! Here’s to a less coughy sneezy winter :)

  13. Thanks so much for this post. I’m a nurse and get a flu shot every year, knowing full well that it won’t protect from all flu viruses. I also think eating real food is the best protection and I will be incorporating your “shots” into my daily routine.

    • Thank God, There are tons of natural herbs, and other good things in your own home that are awesome for the body. Did you know one of them is Epsom salts, magnesium is a natural mineral the body needs too. God bless

  14. First off, the title is BRILLIANT!
Second, for all the flu shot “true believers” saying this is”NOT going to prevent somebody from contracting the VIRUS that causes the flu” (as if the vaccine will) why don’t you google allion and allicin and see what The University of Maryland Medical Center had to say. I have personally beaten down the flu in 48 hours without it ever getting a real hold on me using natural ingredients. I am a 47 year old type 1 juvenile diabetic. My youngest who has asthma didn’t get the vaccine this year or last year, and she too got the flu at the same time I did, took the same home remedies I did, and she got over it in the same time frame. FYI, I do know the diff between a cold and the flu. I don’t get colds anymore.

Finally I would like to make a suggestion for the list. I used a vile concoction called garlic tea, and man does it work. You have to cut about 3-4 cloves into pieces and let them sit for 10 minutes(this is important) before adding the boiling water. (I added oregano oil to it when it cooled.) Also, add cranberries to the blueberry shot. There are enzymes in them that kill the virus.

    • I cut the ginger root in pieces, blend, and add a little water as I go until it becomes a drink … yummy! I call my version ‘tea’ as well.

  15. Love this! Cant wait to try them all!

  16. I love these. I try to add more vitamin c foods like red bell peppers and more blueberries when it gets to cold season. Personally I dont get the flu shot. I’ve gotten it twice in my life and those were the only times I had the flu ever. I dont get sick that often anyway. Ill have to try these and try them on my fiance who gets sick at least once a year.

  17. What a creative name!! Ha. And the pics are awesome. Thank you so very much for the lovely display and post, I need to pass this one on to my readers!!!!

  18. Those work for me. I love using natural healthy ingredients to stay healthy. Thank for putting this together in a cute way for others to see. IF you didn’t raise it or grow it, don’t put it in your body…

  19. Love love love this! I take my Green’s shot every day, superpacked with fruits and veggies and 38 superfoods to keep my immune system happy and healthy the all natural way :)

  20. If you take a full tablespoon of extra Virgin coconut oila day that will be enough to fight all colds and flu all season long. I’ve been takinging it for 2 years now and every cold and flu my boyfriend has come home with I never got sick. The extra virgin coconut oil has natural antibiotic, antiviral, and antifungal properties and as you know your immunity starts in your gut. Great tips though!

  21. The last time I checked this was America freedom of speech and also freedom of choice she was just giving us alternatives it’s our choice to choose if this is the way we want to go thank you so much for sharing this

  22. It seems EVERY TIME someone posts something that is supposed to be positive, you get the cranky DEBATE people who HAVE to give their 2 cents (more like $100) worth in negativity. I understand you have freedom of speech but sheesh, lighten up. It would be much more productive if people gave their opinion on an article in an informative way WITHOUT resorting to 7th grade behavior!

  23. These are great! I did want to point out on the blueberry shot though that I think you mean a recent study by Oregon State University as opposed to the U of O. (http://oregonstate.edu/ua/ncs/archives/2013/sep/red-grapes-blueberries-may-enhance-immune-function) Go Beavs!

  24. Don’t dilute the apple cider…..and don’t sweeten it either.
The acid is like the acid in lemon and will lower the strep load in your throat……….
bugs don’t like the acid environment………….
use peroxide if you struggle with staph………..gargle and spit

  25. In summer, I always put a tbsp. of vinegar in my iced tea every day. It’s changes your metabolism and you don’t smell so biteable to mosquitoes and other things that fly down here in the deep South, and bite you. Also works on sand gnats and yellow flies. Makes sense that it would work for your immune system in the winter, so I’ll give it a try. I think it will be a good companion for my daily dose of homemade elderberry syrup.

  26. This is just wonderful… my favourite of the bunch is the apple cider vinegar.. it really does wonders.. not just for flu but also for anxiety or upset stomach. thanks for sharing this!

  27. Hey Ed. I can say with confidence that 100 years ago people couldnt get their hands on all these healthy fruits and veggies. People ate what grew in their climate, and what they could afford. So chances are if people could eat everything we are able to get ahold of, and understood the benefits. Sickness would have been much less of a problem

    • Life expectancies lengthened tremendously when people (especially doctors and midwives) figured out that they needed to wash their hands, and when better hygiene measures were instituted, so that people’s water wells weren’t being polluted by privies. Antibiotics also made a big difference, as did better nutrition. Generally, 100-odd years ago, if you made it to the age of 5, and didn’t die in childbirth, you had a pretty good chance of living just as long as people do today.

  28. Pls can I give any of these to my one year old baby?he has been having cattahrr for about a month now.all medication with little or no effect. Thank you.
